Understanding, Preventing, and Solving Aggression and Biting Behaviors in Companion Parrots Written and Illustrated by Sally Blanchard The Beak Book is the first comprehensive book with practical trust building information about preventing and solving the number 1 problem people have with companion parrots. As editor/publisher of the Companion Parrot Quarterly, author of the Companion Parrot Handbook, and long time Parrot Psychology columnist for Bird Talk magazine, Sally Blanchard is perhaps the best-known and most highly respected name in the field of companion parrot information. With her theory of Nurturing Guidance, Sally Blanchard provides parrot caregivers with a logical, common sense, trust-building approach to maintaining a positive relationship with companion parrots. The highly praised Companion Parrot Handbook gives readers practical information about all aspects of parrot behavior and care. The Beak Book provides readers with extensive information they need to understand and work with aggressive behavior. This book is the first volume of the Companion Parrot Behavioral Solution Series. Future volumes will deal with screaming, feather destructive behavior, fear related behaviors, and winning the trust of rescue birds. It is unlikely that anyone who first brings a companion parrot into his or her life has the idea that it will be a temporary situation. Unfortunately many parrots do not stay in their homes because their caregivers don't have the information they need to provide the behavioral guidance that keeps them tame. With over thirty years of bird experience and her theory of Nurturing Guidance, Sally Blanchard's practical advice shows you why biting and aggression are actually the easiest behavioral problems to understand, prevent, and solve. Sally Blanchard's long awaited Beak Book will play an instrumental role in keeping reader's parrots in their homes.

The Complete Pet Bird Owner's Handbook (Revised Edition)

by Dr. Gary A. Gallerstein

Covers all aspects of pet bird ownership, including selection, nutrition, behavior, home physicals, emergency medical care, preventative medicine, and much more. Presented in seventeen chapters, this book provides guidance on getting started, achieving optimum health, and understanding what your bird needs from you for a happy, healthy life. Includes an index of health and illness signs, general index, bibliography of additional resources, and superb photos and illustrations to support the detailed text. You will consider this book to be the most essential reference in your avian library, a constant source of reliable advice, assistance, and assurance for your bird's well-being.

Reviews:

"The Complete Pet Bird Owner's Handbook is a valuable addition to the home library. It encompasses a broad range of practical information from behavior and diet, to recognizing various illnesses and quickly stabilizing medical emergencies during those important minutes it takes to get to the veterinarian. Those new to bird 'parenthood' will learn much from it and veteran bird 'parents' will find The Complete Pet Bird Owner's Handbook a quick and valuable source of reference."

— Chris Davis, "The Bird Lady," companion bird behavior consultant

"The contents of the The Complete Pet Bird Owner's Handbook are as good as the dramatic book cover promises. Dr. Gallerstein has made the third edition of the handbook user-friendly, and it's full of current information in this rapidly growing field. This book should be in the library of anyone with an interest in pet birds, including bird owners, aviculturists and veterinarians. The book is comprehensive, covering topics such as selecting a bird, proper caging and furnishing the cage, avian anatomy and physiology, basics of bird breeding, avian veterinary care, and when birds and owners part. The chapter on medical emergencies is particularly helpful because it begins with a table that lists the common avian emergencies with a rating of 1–3 stars to determine how quickly veterinary care is needed. Conveniently, there is an index of signs of illness observed by bird caretakers, with pages in the textbook that cover that subject. There is also a general index.

The new edition comes nine years after the second edition. Although there are parts of the text that have not changed, this new edition is easier to navigate and contains more information in the areas that are currently of greatest interest. The chapter on behavior has tripled in size and covers many more species, including a section on behavior of finches and canaries. The book contains more than 120 additional pages, compared with the second edition. This reasonably priced book is a valuable reference to have on the shelf."

— Rhoda Stevenson, DVM, ABVP
