Lovebirds so beautiful was the line that Jo used
As pretty as ever they come,
Charlotte just drooled and thought as she looked
"I just have to make Ray, let me have some!"
She begged and she pleaded, she schemed and she planned
But Ray was firm on his stance,
He said "you don't need no more, you do have enough"
She raised an eyebrow and threw him a glance.
Her eyes filled with tears as she trembled her lip
She whispered "Honey I just need one more,"
Ray shook his head and held true to his choice
And said he wouldn't give in like before!
But after thirty long years of marriage
Charlotte had learned the best tricks of the trade,
She said, "Sweetie remember that long golf game
The one that kept Dinner many hours delayed?"
"And how about that brand new shiny camera
The one with the digital works,
Or that new computer program
The one that came with all the perks"!
Ray now knew he was defeated
He knew she had learned from all the best,
Her Grandmother, her Mother, her Sister
He knew it was useless to protest.
He said "O.K. we'll get another
But remember I said just one",
Charlotte nodded in full agreement
For she knew the deal was done.
They travelled many hours
Then finally landed at Jo's door,
Charlotte said "show me precious beauties
For I have come for more".
Jo said "Oh I will show you my little pied
One so perfect you must see,
And there's a little whiteface cinnamon"
Charlotte's heart was full of glee.
She couldn't be expected
To choose between the two,
She said to Jo "I'll take them"
Jo said "what will Raymond do"?
Well Ray at first would show some anger
As Charlotte hadn't kept her word,
But when he thought that she was sleeping
He tiptoed in and held the little bird.
He thought what pretty little babies
Of course he knew his heart was soft,
He wondered how he had tried to deny her
At his own anger now he scoffed.
He knew she loved these precious lovebirds
And he himself had grown quite fond,
Of the way their little claws clasped round his fingers
And to his "pretty bird" they did respond.
So today in our house we're happy
As we struggle to get all our cages clean,
We sit back and remark to each other
We have the most beautiful birds ever seen!
